From September 8th until September 22nd of 2018, Professor Górecki of the University of Portsmouth visited NUSP as a visiting professor.

Professor Górecki graduated from the University of Warsaw (School of Medicine) with honors and would continue his studies and research at Cambridge, London, Pittsburgh, and Harvard Medical School where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He is currently a professor in the School of Pharmacy and Biological Sciences at the University of Portsmouth and their head researcher.

With the signing of a memorandum in 2017, international exchanges between the University of Portsmouth and NUSP began in earnest and this includes not only student visits, but also exchanges between faculty in order to look for projects to collaborate upon. During his two weeks at NUSP, Dr. Górecki gave special lectures to students in their 1st through 3rd year of classes and also taught the graduate students. Furthermore, Dr. Górecki and Professor Shinba (the head of research at NUSP) gave special presentations to the faculty and staff and there were also presentations made by five junior faculty of NUSP in hopes of looking for common ground for future research projects.

On the last day of his visit, Dr. Górecki, with the help of a friendly introduction by Professor Noro (Professor of Applied Molecular Chemistry) of Nihon University, College of Industrial Technology, visited the Tsudanuma Campus and met with Vice Dean Shimizu and gave a special lecture. Dean Ochiai of the College of Industrial Technology and Professor Hiaki,Chair and professor of Applied Molecular Chemistry) both greatly appreciated Dr. Górecki’s visit.

On a personal note, Professor Górecki limits himself to not only the study of molecular medicine, but he has a great interest in all things Japanese. His motto is, “It is unforgiveable for me not to know something.” He also shared about his experience learning English, as it is not his mother tongue, and that was of great interest to all who heard about his experience to take up the language. “Foreign languages are great tools.”was something his father impressed upon him and it may also be a lesson from the history of Poland.

Again, from the bottom of our hearts, the School of Pharmacy wishes to thank Professor Górecki for being a true friend and for all he has done for us.
