Professor Emeritus Dr. Steven R. Kayser visited NUSP once again from October 1st for three weeks in 2017 in which he gave six lectures as a visiting professor. Dr. Kayser was able to speak based on his many years of work as a teacher-practitioner at the highly regarded School of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), on pharmacy education on the global level as well as the latest trends in pharmacy practice.

For the 4th-year students, he gave a graduate-level lecture based on his long years of experience working in a coagulation clinic affiliated with the USCF hospital and the role pharmacogenetics plays in the administration of Warfarin to patients of various racial backgrounds.

Furthermore, in a series of lectures to students, he also spoke about the roles of the pharmacist in America: analyzing prescriptions, assisting in optimal drug therapy for patients, the managing of a pharmacy, and the various other roles a pharmacist plays in a hospital setting. In doing so, students were able to learn able about the differences and similarities between pharmacists in Japan and America.

Dr. Kayser also attended the practical pharmacy training sessions of the 4th-year students on two occasions to see how NUSP students were being trained to counsel simulated patients and students had opportunities to speak with Professor Kayser on a one-to-one basis. He also visited the botanical gardens of NUSP and in his free time he attended kabuki and saw the Kawagoe Festival.
