Overseas Joint Research with the School of Medicine and Public Health of Soochow University


The Signing Ceremony of an Agreement on Overseas Joint Research and a Commemoration Ceremony Celebrating the Opening of a China-Japan Joint Laboratory on Environmental Health Held by the School of Pharmacy of Nihon University and the School of Medicine and Public Health of Soochow University, under the Auspices of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)

With the start of an exchange-joint research project between Japan and China in April 2018, under the auspices of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the School of Pharmacy, Nihon University and the School of Medicine and Public Health, Soochow University held a signing ceremony of an agreement on overseas joint research and celebrated the opening of a “China-Japan Joint Laboratory on Environmental health” in the conference room of the School of Medicine, Soochow University from 2:00 P.M., on Friday, October 19th, 2018. The celebration was kicked off by Party Secretary Xiewen Rui, head of the School of Medicine and Public Health, Soochow University. The School of Pharmacy of Nihon University was represented by Professor and vice dean Kenzo Yamanaka, representative of joint research on the Japanese side and head of the Environmental Toxicology Laboratory, and Assistant Professor Yasuyo Shimoda of the same lab. Soochow University was further represented by Dean Yue Qin of the School of Medicine, Professor Zengli Zhang, vice dean of the School of Public Health, Professor Yan An, representative of joint research on Chinese side, and professor of the Toxicology Laboratory of the School of Public Health, and other directors concerned including the International Affairs, Research, and Academic Affairs, and other faculty such as professors, postgraduate and undergraduate students.
To begin with, Xiuwen Rui, representative of the School of Medicine and Public Health, Soochow University, introduced the summary of the joint research under the auspices of Japan-China exchange-joint research project from April, 2018. Even before this project started, a profound mutual research base had already been prepared in that Professor Yan An of the School of Medicine and Public Health, Soochow University, had earned his Ph.D. from the School of Pharmacy, Nihon University, and shared a strong partnership as an alumnus of Nihon University. With the joint research adopted as a starting point, it was agreed that both institutions would establish a joint research project to reinforce the partnership and expand upon the relationship for the nurturing of young researchers and international exchanges of faculty and students in the future. As such, the Agreement on International Joint Research included the establishment of a China-Japan Joint Laboratory on Environmental health in the School of Medicine and Public Health, Soochow University. The nurturing of future faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate students is at the heart of the agreement in order to foster a new generation of young researchers through various collaborative projects and raise the levels of the research conducted at both institutions. In the future, detailed discussions will be held about this project in order to start research studies at both universities.

After the meeting, Professor Xiuwen Rui of the School of Medicine and Public Health of Soochow University and Professor Kenzo Yamanaka, vice dean of the School of Pharmacy of Nihon University, can be seen shaking on the agreement for collaboration on international academic exchanges and the opening of the China-Japan Joint Laboratory on Environmental health.

After that, the dean of the School of Medicine, Soochow University, Professor Yue Qin, bestowed upon Professor Kenzo Yamanaka the title, “Overseas Collaborative Professor” of the School of Medicine, Soochow University.

Following that ceremony, Professor Yamanaka proceeded to give a one-hour-long presentation entitled, “Toxicological significance of methylation and sulfurization in the metabolic process of inorganic arsenics: Active species caused by metabolic redox and molecular aspects of redox homeostasis in cell transformation”.
With the signing of the agreement, the School of Pharmacy, Nihon University and the School of Medicine and Public Health, Soochow University look forward to developing international exchanges with a special emphasis upon collaborating on research projects.
