2023 Study Abroad Program for Students from the School of Pharmacy, University of Portsmouth
For the first time in four years, we hosted a student pharmacist from the University of Portsmouth (UoP). The program started on August 30th and ended on September 8th. During that time, we introduced various aspects of pharmacy education and practice to the the student. It was also an opportunity to teach about the Japanese language and culture.
The program, much like the one students experienced in their studies at the University of Portsmouth in August, consisted of two parts. Mornings found the student in the classroom with lectures about various topics followed by afternoons with visits to clinical sites. The lectures were given by the NUSP faculty in English with time for questions and discussions. There was also active learning experiences that were attended by NUSP students and other faculty.
Visits to clinical sites included those to the hospitals affiliated with Nihon University where the student had the opportunity to visit the pharmacies, speak with the pharmacists and other healthcare providers and learn about the similarities and differences between the UK and Japan.
There were also visits to various pharmacies: community, Kampo, and one specializing in house calls.
Of course the student had chances to visit cultural sites in Tokyo and Chiba and see various aspects of modern Japan and this was often with the help of our students who had visited UoP. The smiles say a lot, no?

The Summer Program at Nihon University ended with a certification ceremony attended by many who contributed to its success. In the end, we very much look forward to the continuation of this and the study abroad program at UoP and the further growth in the relations between the two schools of pharmacy.
